Armageddon

October 29th, 2009 | by Roy |

With the Wild losing at home to the hapless Nashville Predators last night 4-3 it became clear to me that the team is approaching its worst case scenario:  Niklas Backstrom is falling apart.  Up until last night he was the one player who had been consistent this season, keeping the team in games when they shouldn’t be, making saves on countless odd man rushes and just being a calming influence in front of the net.

But last night he crumbled.  The regular Nik Backstrom would’ve allowed one, maybe two goals last night.  The TV guys tried to be kind, saying he was “fighting the puck”, but the obvious commentary was that he was sieving out.

He can’t do this, not this year.  With the team trying to employ a new scheme, Backstrom needs to be outstanding, not just ordinary.  I hope this is just an off night for #32 and not a trending topic, because if this continues we could be looking at a Top 3 pick next June, which I guess wouldn’t be a bad thing after all.
