Zidlicky Moving?

Surely with Florida Panther defenseman Jordan Leopold being dealt to the Penguins for a 2nd round draft pick we can assume that Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky would command a first rounder, right?  Word has it Wild GM Chuck Fletcher is trying hard to get Zidlicky signed to an extension prior to the trade deadline, but if they can’t come to an agreement look for Zidlicky to be dealt.

A Great Day for Hockey

Four games, four great match-ups.  USA-Swiss, Canada-Russia, Finns-Czechs and Slovaks-Swedes.  I can’t remember a better day of hockey games ever.  Sure, the Stanley Cup playoffs feature good games, but this is like having 4 Game 7’s all in the same day.

Barker

Here is my two cents regarding the Cam Barker trade.  Kim Johnsson was leaving at the end of the year.  The Wild, like it or not, are not a playoff contender this season.  They are sellers in the trade market.  You’ve got to get something for your valuable UFA’s that you’re not going to try to re-sign, at Johnsson fit that mold.

Backs is Back

Well, the goaltender shuffle continues. Nik Backstrom regains the starting job tonight at home against the Phoenix Coyotes after recovering from a myriad of injuries. In his absence, Josh Harding, Wade Dublieciwieciewiwicz and Anton Khoubodin all took turns in net. Hopefully Backstrom can regain the form that made him a 2008-09 Vezina finalist and team backbone.

With all the fuss about Bert Blyleven not getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame, a former North Star great’s quest for the Hockey HOF has gone a little unnoticed. Make no mistake about it, Dino Ciccarelli should be in the Hall of Fame. Let’s examine his numbers:

Hockeytown Schmucks in Town

It’s wrong to kick a man when he’s down, right?  That being the case, I shouldn’t mention Detroit’s last game against the Coyotes.  I probably shouldn’t talk about their collapse, giving up 2 goals in the last minutes, going to overtime and losing to a team they’re fighting in the playoff chase.  Taking the high road I shouldn’t write about how their Swedish captain is a shell of his former self, how their goaltending lets in soft goals night after night and I really shouldn’t write about Game 163 either.  Good thing I’m a rightous man, otherwise this post could’ve been really negative.

End the Madness

When will Direct TV and Versus come to terms?  Hopefully soon, my friends.  Not only have a missed the Versus game of the week for the entire season, the playoffs really aren’t that far away and if memory serves, Versus carries a bulk of the playoff action.  It’s hard, very hard, to be a fan of a major professional sports league that isn’t broadcast on your television.
